The Crucible of War by Fred Anderson
We've stocked this book for the past 17 years. The author tells this riveting story as though he lived it...the battle between two world powers and two ancient Indian nations for control of these parts, including the water now lapping near the door to our store on Lake Champlain. What was at stake was a tectonic shift in power, the world over...the results changed Canada, America, London, Paris, Madrid, Havana, Calcutta, Berlin...even Manila. Our little island had a front row seat to the fight as the British, French, Iroquois and Algonquin nations hammered it out.
At 750-pages, Anderson's book is a winter feast! For a shorter "summer" read by the same author, read Anderson's The War That Made America, also available on this site.
