Before you is our collection of hand-made cosies for tea and stovetop espresso makers. They are cut and sewn in Italy by Eda Ademollo, the Mother-in-Law to our daughter! Each one is uniquely designed. No two share the same complete pattern. All display the steady cadence of 8-10 stitches to the inch. We find them remarkable considering that Mama Ademollo has already lived a long life in her native Tuscany, yet shows no interest in a slower pace. She collects old quilts, destined for interior insulation in each cozy, and selects wonderful fabrics for the exterior bodies. Oh, and did we mention that Eda was also a genuine hero during WWII? Let me tell you the story. Shortly before the liberation of Italy in April, 1945, the German Army was governing Italy with a heavy fist. Italian citizens knew the consequences of coming to the aid of American and British soldiers. Immediate execution was standard procedure. Eda was 14 years-old that spring when she learned that a British pilot had crash-landed his Spitfire near her father's farm. She and her cousin rushed to the scene, less than a half-kilometer from a German outpost! They found the pilot injured and slightly burned. His name was Robert. They helped him from the wreckage and hurried him to a nearby cave. There, they dressed his wounds and began to care for him. Each day, they prepared a hot meal despite desperate family food shortages, and carried it to the hideaway. Had they been caught by the Germans, the punishment would have been swift. Their assistance lasted for nearly a month. On Liberation Day, impoverished Italians welcomed freedom, brought to them by the Allied Forces. Eda and her cousin led some U.S. soldiers to the cave, and the pilot was rescued. A week later, a plane flew very low over the family farm. A leather suitcase was tossed from the cockpit and landed nearby. Inside was a collection of impossibly rare sweets, canned goods...and chocolate! Sixty years later, Eda is certain the suitcase was a thankyou note from the British Army! She tells this story as if it happened yesterday, and as she speaks, her strong, aged hands do her bidding with needle and thread. Note: Sewing is not the only task for her remarkable hands. Eda still irons her son's underwear and polishes his shoes!! We've asked her to sign each cozy inside. We think they are pretty special. Click the link under the image to see her collection. We've also included a shot of the amazing stitches. Then click on the box above to select your pattern. Gently hand-wash, and air dry. They will serve you well. These cosies fit a 3-cup teapot and/or a 6-cup espresso maker. Approximately 9"W x 8" T
